This page is intended to present details about my Research Critical Analysis.
My classes prompt for the Research Critical Analysis essay was to answer 1 of the 5 questions that were given to us. My essay was about the difference in an adaptation and fanfiction. “Think about how adaptation might be a form of interpretation. Choose a text based on another text, one which presents a kind of love letter to the original, even while subverting, complicating, updating, or critiquing some of its themes. (Examples might include Wicked/The Wizard of Oz or Clueless/Emma.) What kinds of transformations do you find, and what do they tell you about either source? How is this relationship similar to and different from fan fiction?”
For my essay, I had paid attention to how the trope of star-crossed lovers are presented in both Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare & Devdas by Sanjay L. Bhansali, in both of the works that are a form of adaptation. For my work, I had used scholarly journals, the script of Devdas, and the play of Romeo and Juliet as my form of evidence in order to prove my thesis.

“While the text of Romeo and Juliet can only be judged by the written script, Devdas opens up the audience’s mind to the judgment of the visual aspects of the movie along with the actual script. Bhansali emphasizes the themes that are connected to India’s societal beliefs while Shakespeare emphasizes themes that drew his audience’s attention such as violence and fate. And when paying closer to Devdas, it is easily noticeable on how Bhansali emphasized gender stereotypes, alcoholism, and the caste system within his adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.”
